Windows Marketplace boasts highest average game pricing

Windows Marketplace for Mobile has the highest average price for paid games at $4.91, followed by BlackBerry App World's $4.60 and Nokia Ovi Store's $3.37. iPhone's App Store has an average price of $2.24 for paid games, while Android Market brings up the rear with $2.08.

This is according to analytics firm Distimo's latest app stores report.

The easy conclusion would be that developers stand to make more money from their games on WinMo and BlackBerry.

However, this is where sales volumes come into play. Selling 100,000 copies of a $2 game on the App Store is clearly better than 1,000 copies of a $4 game on Windows Marketplace.

Distimo has also dug into the App Store, showing that RPGs are by far the most expensive games, averaging $7.96 on Apple's store. By contrast, the average price of a puzzle game is $1.49.

Distimo also finds that Puzzle is the most populated game category on the App Store, accounting for 15% of games.

However, when the company tracked games appearing in the App Store's Top Grossing chart, it found that 22% of them were Action titles, compared to just 6% that were Puzzle games.

It's a fascinating reversal of the situation on operator portals several years ago, which tended to be stuffed with action games, yet puzzle titles were the best-sellers.
