Orbital Defense targeting iPhone users
Nov 25th 2009 at 15:54 by Will Freeman

A new iphone shooter named Orbital Defense has been released by Membraine Studios. Adding flick controls to the proven Space Invaders, Missile Commandand Galaga formular, the new release is available now for £1.19.
Apparently the first 'flick shmup' – taken from 'flick control shoot 'em up' – Orbital Defense features a 12-level campaign mode worldwide leaderboards, and a special survival mode. The flick controls ape those used in the extremely popular Paper Toss app, and apply them to the shooter genre
"We're really proud of Orbital Defence because it does what games should: the flick mechanic offers a new experience, and the game is great fun. We really think the gaming community is going to dig it," said co-game designer Mark Sheppard.
"While it is fundamentally a shoot-em-up, we believe Orbital Defence is genre-defining in the context of the iPhone, in the sense that its flick-based shooting mechanic separates it from traditional shooters. It's not as radical as the shift to a first-person perspective that separated, say, Duke Nukem 3D from Duke Nukem 1 and 2, but we really think it's a step in the right direction for the iPhone. We're hoping to see more games embrace the iPhone's control surface for what it is."
