Gameloft reaffirms Android support

Gameloft has issued a statement reaffirming its support for Google's Android platform. The publisher has promised to continue releasing games for the current generation of Android handsets, while making richer HD titles for newer models like the Motorola Droid and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

"The arrival of this new generation of phones will allow the development of High Definition games that make the most of the technological capacity and the speed of execution offered by the new Android phones," says VP of publishing Gonzague de Vallois.

"Consumers will benefit from a top quality gaming experience."

This may come as a surprise, given that last week, the company's CFO told investors that Gameloft had cut its investment in Android due to disappointment at low sales of its games.

"It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone," said Alexandre de Rochefort. "Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue."

Perhaps Google's bigwigs got on the phone after those comments hit the blogosphere...

More likely, somebody at Gameloft told Mssr. Rochefort that his original remarks put himself and the company in a bad light.

What other self-respecting CEO would issue such an odd statement...and to to their investors? That was unprecedented, or very nearly so. If its a matter of material disclosure rules, then lay out the numbers - eg: likely (or imminent) layoffs. But, if there's no fiduciary issue, then why say anything? And why bring up (un-named) 'many others'?

Well, maybe to shift the blame for poor performance? 'We give up. But the problem isn't our games or marketing; its all Google's fault!' However, anybody who has tried Gameloft's Android offerings can tell you: they aren't very good. Worse, tho they bear little resemblance to their iPhone relations, they are priced identically. Dumb move.

Mssr. Rochefort's obtuse claims sound like whinging, plain and simple. I can cite several valid issues which hindered the growth of Android gaming, all of which have been addressed, recently. Rochefort eschewed such rational discourse, choosing instead a rambling denouncement of Android and Google (and their customers), in general.

Not only was this poor form, viz corporate public relations, but also it smacks of weak leadership. Maybe he was hoping attract assistance from Google, in the form of ad-revenue sharing or some other subsidy. If so, I sure hope it worked, because he has definitely exposed himself to unfortunate publicity and unwanted scrutiny.
