Telltale: "People have always wanted episodic gaming"

At an event showcasing the new download-only titles for the Nintendo platforms, Dave Grossman, who worked on the first Monkey Island games as well the new WiiWare additions to the series, has been talking of the merits of episodic gaming.

"Instead of being like cinema, episodic games are more like television," said Grossman, who suggested that the 'water-cooler conversations' episodic games inspire will mean they become increasingly popular.

"The reason people haven't been playing games like this all along is that the logistics of distribution gets in the way and makes it impossible," he added. "With services like WiiWare and DSiWare, that all changes."

Grossman, who wrote and programmed the first two Monkey Island games with Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer, was attending the event to promote the second and third episodes of the ongoing Tales of Monkey Island WiiWare series by Telltale Games.

"Nintendo has always been the company that has had the best sense of casual, playful fun that people really warm to," stated Grossman.

"The other thing is that Nintendo is the most forward thinking company in terms of this kind of thing, and what is important for episodic games. They've been great at working with us to make this happen, despite the fact that we've had these crazy development schedules.
