Poisonville brings GTA to browsers

Browser-based gaming is one of the fastest growing sectors in the casual games space and now German firm Bigpoint has married the accessible gaming model with a title that will tap perfectly into the massive Grand Theft Auto audience.

New outing Poisonville, which has been in development for over a year, has been built on the back of a €1m investment and does not require the downloading of any software. Bigpoint claims that Poisonville is the first browser game to use motion capture for its character modelling. It also boasts a dynamic day/night cycle.

The game, which is set in the USA, sees four gangs going head to hear in a street war. Players are able to affiliate themselves with one of the groups from the off. Activities include stealing car stereos, attacking enemy gangs and visiting the Red Light District.

There’s plenty of depth to the gameplay, too, with characters able to go shopping in virtual malls as well as indulge in the normal vehicular theft. It will also be possible to purchase in-game currency.

Being a browser-based title it’s not surprising to see plenty of multiplayer and co-op gameplay additions, with some missions requiring two or more players to team up to complete.

Poisonville looks like being one of the most ambitious browser-based action titles to date, and will be released some time in 2010.

I wonder if this uses Adobe Flash, or some other video plug-in that the game developer also created.

If it is the latter, then it must be a plug-in that is compatible with a number of browsers (Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Microsoft Internet Explorer) rather than an ActiveX control for just exclusively Microsoft Internet Explorer.

If the former, then I would be surprised that Adobe Flash would be sufficiently fast for a game that is this intensive graphically. Hard to say.

Does anyone have additional information regarding what browser plug-in technology they are implementing for this browser based game?

Hey Neil

I had the same thoughts. They may be using Unity (which is only 3.4MB) but then that's not 'no download'. They could also be using Papervision whih is truly 'no download' but that would be tough, very brave, creative and cutting edge.

They could easily make 'simple 3D' in Flash with games programmer expertise, but it just would not run fast or efficiently enough to create the kind of screen shots shown. Well, if it does then hats off to the team.

If you don't know Unity I can intro you to the MD.

It would great if someone involved with Poisonville could comment about this intriguing game development.
