iPhone 3.0 rollout brings internet to its knees

Short of temporarily buying up all of the world’s net servers, Apple could never completely guarantee a smooth global rollout of the new iPhone 3.0 OS, but all things considered last night’s 6pm release went remarkably smoothly.

Many users complained about slow download speeds, but with this author’s beefy cable internet connection delivering the 230MB file in under ten minutes, any problems experienced are more likely to be due to the limited capacity of individual ISP’s bandwidth.

The only major hitch in the process came courtesy of mobile operator O2 which failed to keep its systems up to speed, preventing iTunes from automatically authorizing MMS capabilities on a user’s O2 account. Activations continued throughout the night with many users receiving a notification message from O2 this morning.

Thousands are still waiting though, and indications are that the rollout will not be complete until tomorrow.

On the iTunes front, whilst Apple was able to serve the update well the iTunes shop and App Store are still struggling to keep up with the pace, though all should be back to normal by the end of the day.

Next up for Apple and O2 is the launch of the iPhone 3GS tomorrow – something that could well see both O2’s and Apple’s networks tested yet again until well into the weekend.
