EA ditches SecuRom for The Sims 3

Publisher EA has confirmed that it has dropped its controversial SecuRom copy protection system for its upcoming release of The Sims 3, opting instead for a more standard serial code system.

EA ran into trouble for its use of SecuRom with last year’s PC hit Spore, with users complaining that its three-install limit was too strict. As a result, piracy levels for the game were above average as many sought to source DRM-free copies from illegal sources.

“We have heard your requests over the past months and here is our plan for The Sims 3,” Sims development head Rod Humble stated on the official website. “The game will have disc-based copy protection – there is a serial code just like The Sims 2. To play the game there will not be any online authentication needed.

“We feel like this is a good, time-proven solution that makes it easy for you to play the game without DRM methods that feel overly invasive or leave you concerned about authorization server access in the distant future.

The Sims 3 is out in the UK on PC and Mac on June 5th.

You are quite incorrect in your statement. No where did Rod say they were dropping the securom. He said they removed the DRM. All that means is that people do not need to be connected to the internet to play the game or to connect to verify legal installs. Securom is a copy protection program. It is not DRM. He also did not say that they have removed the limited installs.
The sims 2 games have disc based copy protection. That disc based protection is securom. The sims 2 games also use a serial code.
All EA officially said is that the drm is being removed and that you don't need to be connected to play.
The sims 3 uses the EADM ( ea download manager). That contains securom, installs securom, and updates securom. You can not get game patches without the EADM. So unless they create a special new EADM just for the sims 3.... there will be securom.
There has been no official statement from EA as of right now about removing securom or removing the install limits.
