Rumours point to Premium Apple App Store
Mar 16th 2009 at 10:20 by Michael French

Apple is getting ready to launch an area in its iPhone App Store that will let publishers and developers sell more expensive games for the device.
According to a report on Wired, 'the premium section would largely be focused on games, giving game makers a channel to offer more in-depth (and pricier) titles without getting lost in the clutter of free and $1 apps'.
So far the App Store has been very popular with independent developers and smaller studios, but their games have all be released at sub-£10 price points. This 'velvet rope' area would make the digital download site more attractive to publishers that have been otherwise reluctant to invest in iPhone games due to lower margins.

If this is the case, they're gonna have to make damn sure the quality of game warrents a £20 price tag.
Personally 90% of the games I've downloaded aren't worth their price tag, and I've paid between £0.59 - £3.99 for most.

Hmm. Pressure from larger companies with more overheads to cover? If there's anything more frustrating than cheap shovelware, it's expensive shovelware.

The Premium AppStore is rumoured to only be available to major corporates (the likes of EA and Gameloft). This seems like a mistake to me - premium price should be for premium products, not for companies with big overheads (as Fred says). I think that the premium appstore is necessary; I just hope that Apple makes it accessible for innovative indies as well as corporate behemoths.
