SPIL becomes largest casual games portal

A year of boom in 2008 that saw SPIL’s global traffic grow by 75 per cent has, according to the comScore Media Metrix figures, seen SPIL become the largest casual games portal network in the world.

The growth, which was fuelled by an increase in traffic of 269 per cent in the US, has seen SPIL climb from the fifth highest network at the beginning of last year to the position of global leader.

A number of territories saw key traffic growth for SPIL last year, with the UK (113 per cent), France (52 per cent) and Germany (19 per cent) leading the way. Global revenue was also up, climbing 125 per cent year-on-year.

“We are particularly proud of reaching the number one ranking in casual game portal networks worldwide,” SPIL CEO Peter Driessen stated. “SPIL Games is a stand-alone, fully-dedicated and independent portal network, while competitors like Yahoo! Games and MSN Games are general portals with a channel for casual games.

“And, over the last year, we've been dedicated to growing our audience through a strategy focused on providing quality, fun-to-play, localised, and segmented portals.”

I wouldn't say they are a portal? No ONE property they own is number one in any market? (Ok, maybe the Netherlands)
It is a misleading press release. Another thing is this is important for advertisers, but what advertiser buys ads WORLD WIDE? This needs to be looked into.

@Laurent:
The number 1 ranking is the overall ranking worldwide. With most portals or traffic networks, they have country specific targeted contents and so are the ads.
