Spore heading to Wii this year

EA Maxis has confirmed it will be releasing four new titles in the Spore series before the end of 2009, including expansion packs and standalone products and, for the first time, a Wii iteration of the franchise.

Spore senior producer Morgan Roarty revealed the four releases will be spread across PC, Wii and DS and are due to hit shelves throughout the year, according to CVG. He claimed they will show the faith EA places in the franchise and that he would love for Spore to be “as big as The Sims”.

Regarding a possible Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the game, he said: “I think first and foremost we’d have to have the right design. The obvious out of the box thinking would be to port the PC product but I don’t think that’s really the right design. We’d possibly go deeper into space but in my mind, before something like that would get greenlit, it would have to be the right design.”

The first new release will be an expansion pack, Spore: Galactic Adventures, which will offer “a deeper variety of gameplay” by providing players with an expanded toolset. This will focus on the game’s Space stage and allow gamers to create and customise planets and missions that can be shared with other players.

Spore: Creature Keeper will be a standalone product targeted at younger gamers. Roarty described this as a miniature version of The Sims and will see players nurturing newly born creatures that have “Sims motives like energy and bladder”.

There will also be two Spore titles developed specifically for Nintendo platforms. Spore Hero will mark the series first release on Wii and will be an adventure game set in “a beautiful new world”. Its counterpart, Spore: Hero Arena, will be released on DS, although no details have been given on the game’s content at the moment.
