The PlayStation 2 is starting its ninth year in fine form with news that Sony’s hugely popular and now casual-orientated machine has now surpassed the 50 million units sold barrier in the North American market.
The Associated Press reports that the machine, which today carries an RRP of $130, sold an impressive 206,000 units in November. Its ongoing success is credit not only to Sony’s continued support of its device, but also to the company’s successful strategy realignment.
The PS2 is now a machine designed to cater for the growing casual games market thanks not just to its family-friendly release schedule but also to its accessible price point. Indeed, the PS2 was the pioneer of accessible casual gaming, having debuted the likes of SingStar, Buzz! and EyeToy.
However, the machine still holds universal appeal, with its unrivalled software catalogue truly offering something for everyone, be it Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing.
