Despite Microsoft’s obvious intention to make significant inroads into the casual games market, the annual sales charts for the firm’s Xbox 360 digital distribution service Xbox Live Arcade have shown a resounding victory for traditional ‘hardcore’ titles.
The Behemoth’s arcade fighter Castle Crashers was the most downloaded game on the service, followed by Bizarre Creations’ hardcore 2D shooter Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 and mind-bending platformer Braid.
The highest place casual title in the list was the recently released Kingdom for Keflings in fourth – a title that undoubtedly benefited from being the first to support Microsoft’s new avatar functionality introduced in a recent firmware update.
Other casual titles in the rankings include UNO, Worms, Bomberman Live and Marble Blast Ultra. However, more prominent were traditional titles such as Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Duke Nukem 3D, Soul Calibur and 1942: Joint Strike.
Microsoft’s Major Nelson has the complete rundown.
