Has Wii Sports become the best selling game ever?
Jan 5th 2009 at 10:42 by Ben Parfitt

The latest numbers from controversial stat-crunchers VG Chartz are claiming that Wii Sports has surpassed Nintendo’s own 1985 NES title Super Mario Bros to become the best selling video game of all time.
The site claims that global sales of the title to date have hit 40.52 million, edging past Super Mario Bros’ sales of 40.24 million.
Wii Sports comes bundled with Nintendo Wii console in the US and Europe but is available as a standalone title in Japan. The site’s sales numbers, of course, do not take into account sales of Super Mario Bros on Nintendo’s Virtual Console service, meaning true sales of the retro platformer could be considerably higher..
VG Chartz credits Nintendo with the best 11 selling games of all time, with its list including the likes of Pokemon Red/Green/Blue, Tetris, Duck Hunt, Nintendogs and Super Mario World.
The next highest next-gen title on the list is Wii Play, whose 19.68 million sales make it the ninth best-selling title ever. You have to go all the way down to number 38 to find the highest rating non-Nintendo next-gen outing – Microsoft’s Xbox 360 exclusive Halo 3, which according to the site has sold 8.88 million copies worldwide.
Nintendo has told CasualGaming.biz that it is unable to confirm or deny VG Chartz’ numbers.
