US Army infiltrates Second Life

The idea’s a sound one but it’s a bit like bombing the hideout once the terrorists have fled – the US Army has announced that it has established a presence in once-mighty online world Second Life.

The military plans to use its virtual HQ to hunt out potential new recruits. General William Wallace of the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command unit stated: “Over the next thirty to forty-five days you might, if you’re one of them Second Life avatar dudes, that likes to go populate islands within Second Life, you will find an Army island in Second Life.

“If you perform well in the activities on offer you get points and those points can be used to buy virtual tee-shirts and baseball caps.”

Reuters recently announced that it has withdrawn its Second Life correspondent from the service.
