Games more popular than apps on smartphones

A new study entitled ‘Portable Devices’ from North American market stats firm NPD claims that the use of portable devices is on the rise – and that gaming is increasing in popularity amongst users.
The report claims that at least half of portable device owners are using their machines more than they were three months ago, with smartphone users seeing the biggest use growth – and interestingly, smartphone users are more likely to play games than use business applications.
iPhone users, in particular, have shown a sharp rise in game playing, though it’s also noted that the main demographic for portable gaming is six to eight year olds – younger than is seen with home consoles.
In addition, the top location for using portable devices is still the home, suggesting that the likes of iPhone and DS are increasingly competing with home consoles such as the Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3, as well as the PC.
