Apple files new motion-sensing patent
Nov 10th 2008 at 16:05 by Ben Parfitt

As Apple continues to cement its position as a serious contender to the likes of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft in the games space, it has emerged that the company has filed a new patent for an Apple remote control that bears more than a passing resemblance to Nintendo’s own Wii Remote.
Apple Insider reports that the device will be better equipped to deal with adverse lighting conditions that Nintendo’s, with the patent stating: “Some remote control systems use infrared (IR) emitters to determine the position and/or movement of a remote control.
“Such systems, however, often experience a common problem in that they may not be able to distinguish desired or predetermined IR light sources from undesirable environmental IR sources, e.g., the sun or a light bulb. Because those systems may mistake environmental IR sources for IR emitters, they may incorrectly determine the position and/or movement of the remote control.”
Though Apple currently supplies a remote for using the multimedia features of its products such as MacBook, iMac and AppleTV, future compatibility with games downloaded from the Apple Store would be a simple step for the firm to make.
