10m iPhones already on the market, say number crunchers
Oct 7th 2008 at 13:45 by Michael French

Apple fans at The Mac Observer have been doing some investigation into the serial numbers printed inside each iPhone and how the detail might correlate to the number of handsets made - and they claim that latest info says close to 10m of the popular devices are already on the market.
Readers at Mac Observer's Apple Finance Board (seen by us via Forbes), have been collating the serial number, and reckon the (seriously) 9,190,680th phone was recently purchased.
The number, according to reports, sets Apple up nicely before it announces its sale figures and revenues for the previous financial quarter - many now expect Apple to say it has shipped 10m of the devices already, ahead of schedle.
Steve Jobs said he expected the company to hit the 10m mark by the end of the year.
