Epic: ‘We’re aiming for casual gamers’
Oct 3rd 2008 at 14:42 by Christopher Dring

With just weeks until the highly anticipated release of Gears of War 2, Epic design director Clifford Bleszinski has told MCV that the developer is targeting the casual gamer.
The original Gears of War sold in excess of five million copies, and secured a 94 per cent Metacritic rating in the process. And the Gears of War franchise has now eclipsed Unreal Tournament as the developer’s flagship title.
“Gears has become our most important franchise,” he said. “Unreal Tournament has been our bread and butter for years, but it is hard to argue with the success of Gears. Unreal Tournament III is a game we really care about and it reviewed very well. But Gears is now our primary franchise.
“Thanks to the success of Guitar Hero and Wii, we have seen lots of new people play games, which is a great thing. So for Gears 2 we’ve made the tutorial mode more accessible, and our casual mode couldn’t be easy enough. We want casual gamers to get involved this time. Yes it has blood and monsters, but it is also a story about loss and redemption.”
The developer has also re-stated there will won’t be a PC version, with piracy as a key factor behind this decision:
“Savvy PC gamers know about bit torrent and other pirating means, so high-end PC games are suffering. It makes sense for us to focus on 360.”

"Unreal Tournament III is a game we really care about and it reviewed very well"
this is incorrect, nobody ended up playing this game as the proof was in the server count/ playerbase online. It was released incomplete, full of bugs and a useless UI.
I argue that no thought went into that game release and it didn't please anybody.
I have lost respect for Epic for releasing it as junk and no supporting it, only to work on their "flagship title" which they have now decided to dumb down for the non gamer audience.
Who's running that ship and why isn't he fired yet?

I could be nuts here, but shouldn't you create a game with the END USER in mind? If you do that, you should make a game for GAMERS, then another game for CASUAL GAMERS.. THESE ARE 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF USERS.. I wish someone would post a comment about this sometime.. oh wait, I have..

Sean, you're deluded. Casual gamers are merely gamers who play in short bursts for a quick, easy dose of fun.

Im looking for their first match3 title based on unreal technology now named Bemonstered, where you'll match with realistic ogre and troll and marine heads. :>
WAT a DOUCHE

sean is stupid. they have insane difficulty which is what gamers are suppose to play if they even consider themselves gamers. AND to help the "END USER" theres always multiplayer DOUCHE!

LoL> Yes, we are all gamers but keep in mind that we don't looking for the same thing when we play (video?) game.
I dont think that 45 years old woman looking for the same thing as is younger son which already play GTA or Halo.
Cliff is totally wrong if he thinks that "accessibility" means "casual gamer". Do you really think that make headshot easier (or somewhat else) will bring mum on Gears of War 2 ? I dont.

I think some of you have missed the point. Casual gamers will be put off by a games that they fancy playing but due to the controls or the difficulty, i.e. they just keep dieing, they are unable to just pick up and play for a short period.
All Cliff and Epic are saying is that they have made it more accessable for the casual gamer so the easy stuff will be really easy to allow them to play but for the GAMER still expect INSANE skill level to give you a real challenge and obviously the online as always will find you someone better than yourself to play against
How can any of this be a bad thing ?? Trying to get more people playing the title ?

Trying to get more people playing the title isnt a bad thing but why should i play online modes if im looking for challenge ? Or why should i finish the game in casual mode first before i can play in a mode designed for me (insane one) ?
IMO, Zuma offers more challenge than Gears of War 1... Ok, Zuma is more accessible but that doesnt mean it's easier. But, today when i look at the triple A maker, they make it more accessible but they totally erase challenge in their game. They might think that more accessible game means easier game.
