Sandlot serves up more Cake Mania

The third installment in Sandlot Games' popular Cake Mania franchise has been released, with functionality even tastier than previous incarnation.

The developer has also announced an updated version of Sandlot Connect, an online gaming resource that the company says is part of its ongoing commitment to deliver "high production value games with strong online community features".

Cake Mania 3 comes with 350 level combinations, thirty new customers, new power-ups, kitchen upgrades, customisable bakeries, integration with Sandlot Connect and full-length video cut scenes.

Daniel Bernstein, CEO at Sandlot Games, said: “Not only does Cake Mania 3 have the highest production quality of any game in its class, but we’ve taken casual gaming a step further and integrated it with our ‘Sandlot Connect’ online resource."

It appears that the combination of the success of the "casual" games and the pursuit of easy earnings by "upgrading" past hits seems to be creating a "hardcore" casual niche.

The reaction speeds, upgrade purchase planning and client recognition required on the later levels of CM2 are already worthy of RTS players. The CM3 boasts of, to steal RTS parlance, additional enemy units, an expanded tech tree, and online connectivity is another step in this direction.

The Casual Game producers have to be careful that they don't end up alienating newer players again by catering for the core that will persistently demand greater expansions to their games.
