‘Women being under-served by games’
May 30th 2008 at 12:28 by Tim Ingham

The CEO of Rebel Monkey – the studio formed by the people behind Diner Dash – believes women are being "under-served" by the video games industry.
Margaret Wallace predicted that the industry would “move quickly” to solve the problem – particularly online – and that “chick flick”-style games would become more prevalent, as they have in the movie business.
Speaking to Next-Gen, Wallace said:
"[In film,] there's been a market developed, some may say a pandering market, for women. I think you'll see that increasingly in videogames and the console world."
She added: "...[People in the industry] know that there is an audience being underserved, and there will be efforts coming out--especially in online gaming and how that relates to the various console offerings--that will try to engage a broader audience.
"I think [consoles and publishers] are going to move slowly ... but they realize the casual gaming segment is the fastest-growing in the audience in the industry, and they can no longer ignore it."

I tend to disagree - you only need to look at the likes of EA, Game Factory, Ubisoft etc. etc. People are really waking up to the idea. Then again, Ms. Wallace has both the heritage in games and the gender (!) to know what she's talking about...

It is absolutely astonishing that more than 80% of the games are developed for less than 20% of the market. According to statistics just 5% of the gamers are core gamers. More than 50% of the gaming community are actually "leisure time gamers" aged between 30 and 50 years and what nobody has been thinking of 50% of this group are women!

There is a some level of disconnect here with regards to distribution. Yes the downloadable market on the portals is good, but is there a retail store where the woman demo is going to purchase games from? I just can't see woman going to Gamestop. There needs to be the right retailer, with the right presentation that could blow the lid off the market. And no Tesco's and Walmart are not what I am talking about.

Just a simple - wonderful - stupendous - bravo! The more we talk about it the more real it will become. Change is coming, however slow it may feel.
